The stories we hear as children—wishes upon a star, beasts, magical apples—draw us together because they unlock a new way of seeing the world. They support us by showing us that we already have the strength or the wit or the beauty inside us, waiting to be unleashed. Children listen to them to learn; adults tell them to remember.
