For November, This Beautiful Sentence will be slightly different. Instead of focusing on other authors’ words I’ve found beautiful, for NaNoWriMo month I’ll be pulling out four of my favorite passages I’ve written during previous NaNoWriMos. When you’re rushing to write 50,000 words in a month, a lot of that material isn’t great, but every once in a while something bright shines through the pile of rubble.
Last week was from 2021. This one is a scene from 2022’s NaNoWriMo that I liked so much I revisited it and extended it a couple books later.
For context, Eileen is 5′ 3″ and has always been sensitive about her height. Richard, her boyfriend, is 6′ 3″.
Eileen put the top of her head against his arm as they walked slowly through the white flakes. “It’s so quiet you can actually hear the snow falling.”
“I know. It’s a good year if a person gets to have ten minutes like these right here. And we’ve had days in a row of it. What a perfect way to end a perfect weekend.”
“With your perfect girlfriend?”
“And her imperfect man.”
“Still want to catch snowflakes on your tongue?”
“Of course.”
“Great. Let’s walk over there and do it.”
“Why over there? We’re out in the open right here.”
“Just trust me.” She guided them to a particular spot, then said, “All right. Now put your head back and start catching.”
He did so. As he did, she climbed on a two-foot rock she had positioned him next to so she could be several inches above him, then leaned down and gave him a deep kiss as his head was tilted back.
As she lifted her head and looked down into his eyes, she said, “You know what I like most about you, love?”
“My sparkling personality?”
“The way that you make me feel like I’m this tall whenever I’m around you.”

This Beautiful Sentence will be going back to normal on Wednesday, December 4th. The quotation will be by a mystery author. Not an author of mysteries, but an author who is famous throughout the world who you’ll have to guess about!
