It was a time before smartphones, when the world moved more slowly. A repressive regime ruled Poland and tried to keep opposing ideas locked up. Then, like now, suppressing books only made people want to read them more. While the authorities slept, the ideas didn’t, smuggled into the country via a large pyramidal organization made up of a thousand smaller organizations.
Many of them were funded by a small project of the CIA, one so small that no one noticed it and, ironically, one so successful because it was so small. It succeeded in keeping traveling the ideas of authors and poets and playwrights, supporting the ideals and ideas of the Solidarity movement which would be one of the bees in the USSR’s bonnet that led to the eventual fall of the Berlin Wall.
